Holiday will make cooling centers hard to come by in Solano County

Editor's note: Shortly after this story was published Wednesday, officials with the Solano Public Library announced special Labor Day hours for three branches — in Fairfield, Dixon and Rio Vista. The Labor Day holiday could make cooling centers tough to come by in Solano County on what is expected to be the hottest day of a multi-day heat wave.

The heat wave is expected to generate temperatures in excess of 100 degrees, with the hottest day of the period likely to occur this upcoming Monday — Labor Day — when the thermometer will swell to over 100 degrees in interior Northern California. The anticipated heat encouraged the National Weather Service in Sacramento to issue an Excessive Heat Warning for much of Northern California, including all of Solano County, starting Saturday morning.

During typical heat waves, Solano Public Library branches are open to serve as public cooling centers for individuals who need a place to cool off. But Labor Day is likely to complicate those plans, as most public library branches are closed for the holiday.

On Wednesday, county officials told Solano NewsNet that just two cooling centers would open on Labor Day: The public library branch in Benicia and the Three Oaks Community Center in Vacaville. One day later, library officials confirmed they will have special hours at three branches — in Fairfield, Rio Vista and Dixon — that will serve as public cooling centers Monday afternoon.

County officials say those who are unable to make it to a cooling center offered the following suggestions for beating the heat:

  • Go for a swim at a local community pool
  • Visit a shopping center, store or other place that is open to the public
  • Take a cool shower
  • Take a day trip to a place where it will be cooler
  • Visit a family member or friend who has air conditioning
