Local officials will be opening cooling centers throughout Solano County during the Labor Day holiday weekend, as an upcoming heat wave promises to bring several days of triple-digit temperatures.

The heat wave corresponds with an Excessive Heat Warning issued by the National Weather Service, which starts on Saturday, September 3 and lasts through Labor Day.

Throughout periods of extreme heat, Solano Public Library branches serve as public cooling centers during their normal business hours. But some library branches are expected to be closed on Monday — which is forecast to be the hottest day of the heat wave — which means residents in some communities will have to look elsewhere for cooling centers or get a little creative.

The following cooling centers will be open during part or all of the heat wave, according to local officials. Solano NewsNet will update this list throughout the weekend as new cooling centers are announced:

County officials say those who are unable to make it to a cooling center offered the following suggestions for beating the heat:

  • Go for a swim at a local community pool
  • Visit a shopping center, store or other place that is open to the public
  • Take a cool shower
  • Take a day trip to a place where it will be cooler
  • Visit a family member or friend who has air conditioning
