An officer-involved shooting claimed the life of a man in Vallejo on Sunday.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. near the intersection of Sutter Street at Curtola Parkway.

Earlier in the evening, Vallejo officers were dispatched to a car crash involving a driver who later tried to flee from police while armed with a knife.

Video obtained by Solano NewsNet showed a shirtless man running from police in the parking lot of a gas station while others attempted to apprehend him.

One eyewitness told Solano NewsNet the man appeared agitated after the crash and was running in and out of traffic while holding the knife. At times, he used the knife to cut himself, the eyewitness said.

Deputies with the Solano County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to provide assistance to officers on the scene. Around 7 p.m., the man reportedly lunged at officers while still holding the knife, and a deputy opened fire at least six times.

Dispatch audio reviewed by Solano NewsNet showed less than 10 seconds elapsed between the time officers confronted the suspect and when they shot him.

A second video obtained by Solano NewsNet showed officers dragging the man’s body on the ground while attempting to handcuff him. The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. He later died from his injuries.

The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting. No other details were released as of Sunday evening.
