Emergency officials have called off their search for a man who jumped into the water from the Rio Vista Bridge on Tuesday.
The incident happened just before noon when firefighters were called to a report of a person who jumped from a restricted area of the bridge into the water.
The man was immediately seen calling for help after jumping into the water, though a responding fire crew said it appeared he was able to swim in the area.
While rescuers were working to launch a boat to rescue the man, he went under the water and did not resurface, according to a person familiar with the incident.
In a post on social media, the Rio Vista Fire Department said it worked with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Solano County Sheriff’s Office to locate the man.
That search was called off after a few hours when the man could not be located, the fire department said in an updated message.
"We are saddened by the apparent outcome of this incident and wish to continue to remind folks of the dangers of our waterways," a fire department spokesperson wrote on Facebook, adding that the agency urged swimmers to use life vests.
"The currents of the Sacramento River and its tributaries are strong and unpredictable," the spokesperson said.
